Trustly at casinos without a Swedish licence: does it work?
Trustly was missing from all 49 casino cashiers we went through on 6 October 2026. Why it went, what sits there instead and how to test a site that claims it.

No, do not expect Trustly at a casino without a Swedish licence. It was missing from the payment methods at all 49 casinos we went through on 6 October 2026, and BankID-based payments were absent as well. What you usually find instead is cards, Apple Pay, e-wallets and a bank transfer option labelled Instant Banking, whose provider is rarely named.
18+. Gambling for money can lead to debt and addiction. For support, Stödlinjen is free and anonymous on 020‑81 91 00. Spelpaus, Sweden’s self-exclusion service, does not cover sites without a Swedish licence.
If you are new to Sweden, a little background helps. Trustly is a Swedish payment institution: you pick your bank, approve the payment in the bank’s own login and the money leaves your account directly. BankID is the electronic identification commonly used for that approval. Trustly is an everyday method at gambling companies licensed by Spelinspektionen, the Swedish Gambling Authority. Outside that licensed market the picture is quite different.
What we found in the cashiers
The table shows what appeared in the cashiers and on the payment pages of 49 casinos that accept Swedish players, fact-checked on 6 October 2026. Five companies run those sites, under licences from the Malta Gaming Authority (22 sites), Anjouan (17) and Estonia’s EMTA (10). Many sister sites therefore share one cashier, so treat the counts as a snapshot of a small group of operators.
| Method | Present at | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Trustly | 0 of 49 | Not in any cashier we went through |
| Swish | 0 of 49 | Built on Swedish bank accounts and not used here |
| Visa and Mastercard | 49 of 49 | The account is usually in euro, so your bank may charge for conversion |
| Jeton | 49 of 49 | E-wallet that needs its own verified account |
| Bank transfer (Instant Banking) | 45 of 49 | You approve in your online bank, and the provider is rarely named |
| Apple Pay | 45 of 49 | A card underneath, so the same conversion applies |
| Skrill and Neteller | 43 of 49 | Check the bonus terms, as these may be excluded |
| Paysafecard | 33 of 49 | Prepaid, so withdrawals need another method |
| Revolut | 23 of 49 | Can pay in euro from a euro account |
Fees, withdrawal times and the rest of the line-up are on our page about casino payment methods.
Why a logo or a list proves little
Trustly itself says that the gambling company decides which Trustly services are offered, so a casino can promise no more than its current agreement and provider allow. Spelinspektionen’s 2025 situation report notes that some companies licensed in Estonia or Malta, but not in Sweden, have on and off had access to direct payments that are normally verified with BankID. The phrase ”on and off” carries the weight here: such routes can vanish at short notice.
Lists of ”Trustly casinos without a Swedish licence” often reflect the market as it looked before 2023. A Trustly badge on a foreign site may be old, may apply to another country, or may not be backed by the cashier at all.
How the BankID payment route closed
Before 2023, some foreign casinos let Swedish players deposit through Trustly or Zimpler, with the payment approved through BankID. In summer 2023 Spelinspektionen ordered Zimpler to stop offering BankID payments to unlicensed gambling companies, under a penalty of SEK 25 million. Zimpler left that part of the market, then won the case.
The order was set aside by the Administrative Court in Linköping in May 2024, and the Administrative Court of Appeal in Jönköping rejected Spelinspektionen’s appeal in February 2025. Those judgments did not declare the payments acceptable in every situation. They found that the authority lacked grounds for that particular order. Payment companies have still largely left this corner of the market.
Pressure on payment flows continues. Spelinspektionen is to keep payment companies informed about which gambling companies hold a Swedish licence, and the proposal in memorandum Ds 2025:23 aims to stop payment flows between Swedish players and illegal gambling. To see how BankID as a login differs from BankID as approval of a payment, read our page on casinos without BankID.
Three names that get mixed up
Much of the confusion around Trustly and licences comes from treating these as one thing.
| Name | What it is | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Trustly | A named payment service | You know who moves the money |
| Pay N Play | A flow where account, identification and deposit happen in one step, launched by Trustly in 2015 | Your bank identifies you as you pay |
| Instant Banking | A catch-all label in the cashier | Nothing about who actually handles the payment |
A bank icon in a cashier therefore does not mean Trustly sits behind it. At the sites in our review you also tend to open an ordinary account and verify yourself with documents, a process known as KYC (know your customer), rather than being identified by your bank.
If a site says it has Trustly
Run through these checks before you deposit anything.
- Open the cashier, not the home page. See which methods appear for a Swedish account. Logos in the footer guarantee nothing.
- See who receives the money. The payment page should show a name you can connect to the company behind the casino.
- Approve only in your own bank. Never enter bank details or BankID codes directly on a casino page.
- Check the licence. Look the company up in the authority’s own register. Our page on MGA casinos covers Malta.
- Start small. The minimum deposit is often 20 euro, and a first withdrawal tells you more than the marketing copy.
- Have a second withdrawal method ready. Withdrawals normally go back to the deposit method, and payment routes can disappear.
Does the same apply to betting?
Our review covered casino cashiers. Decisions on Trustly and BankID payments rest with the payment companies, though, not with the type of game, so start from the same picture for betting and check the cashier yourself. Sports betting has its own page on betting sites without a Swedish licence.
What your payment method does not change
How you pay has no effect on the rules around your play. At gambling companies outside the EEA, net winnings, meaning the difference between winnings and stakes with the same operator during the year, are taxed at 30 per cent as capital income. Winnings of no more than SEK 100 are tax-free. Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, handles this, and our page on tax on casino winnings is worth reading before you play.
Swedish dispute resolution and Spelpaus do not follow you to a site without a Swedish licence. Spelinspektionen says playing there is not illegal for you, but the protection is not there either. Set your own limits before a first deposit. If gambling starts to steer your finances, our responsible gambling page lists where to turn. If you have excluded yourself through Spelpaus, do not play on these sites.
Frequently asked questions about Trustly
Can I use Trustly at a casino without a Swedish licence?
Do not count on it. Trustly was not among the payment methods at any of the 49 casinos we went through on 6 October 2026.
Is Instant Banking the same as Trustly?
No. Instant Banking is a label in the cashier, and the provider behind it is rarely named. It may be a different payment service altogether.
Do casinos without a Swedish licence offer BankID?
Not for login. A payment approved with BankID at your own bank may exist in rare cases through a bank transfer service, but we saw no Swedish BankID payments in the cashiers.
What is the closest alternative to Trustly?
That depends on what you want. A bank transfer is the most similar, cards are the most common, and an e-wallet keeps the casino separate from your bank account.
Is it illegal to deposit at a casino without a Swedish licence?
Spelinspektionen says it is not illegal to play with a gambling company that has no Swedish licence. The Gambling Act is aimed at those who run or promote unlicensed gambling, but you stand outside Swedish player protection.
Can I pay with Paysafecard instead?
Often, yes. Paysafecard appeared at 33 of the 49 casinos in our review. It cannot receive money, so you need another method for withdrawals.
